A 16-year old girl has been arrested after police say she brought a loaded gun into her high school. The teen is a student at Waupaca High.
And for Waupaca parents, Lori Bauer, the news of a gun inside her children's school was frightening.
"You always see it on TV and at other schools, you never think it's going to happen here."
Bauer has two children at Waupaca High. She says she talked with them as soon as she heard what happened.
"I asked them how they were feeling, they said they were shocked but weren't concerned for their safety," Bauer explains.
The Waupaca Police Chief says the teen brought the gun to school on Tuesday. The Reason? Authorities say the center of their investigation is bullying.
"She told the officer she was sick of being harassed," Chief Goke said. But, investigators say she didn't plan to shoot anyone.
"We've never had an incident where someone brought a gun in to a school with the purpose of scaring students," Goke recalls.
Police say the girl had the gun inside her handbag, and showed it to a friend. That friend then told his parents who immediately contacted authorities.
"Bringing a loaded gun to school is a serious offense," Goke explains.
After the news broke, school leaders say they sent a letter home to parents letting them know what happened. That same letter was read aloud to every student in the high school.
"We wanted to get the information out there," district administrator David Poeschl said. "It's important to get the facts before the rumors."
And for Bauer, she was happy with the response and is comfortable sending her children back to school
"Waupaca is a safe school and always will be," Bauer said.
The teenage girl faces three charges, including possession of a deadly weapon and bringing a gun on school property. The Waupaca District Attorney says her case will be handled in juvenile court, which means her name is not being released.
